about

“You’re dead to me.” Four short words marked the end of an era.

In 2008, Sammy Warm Hands and Web The Free Range Human formed The ILLusionists. Both were on the rebound from failed punk/metal bands, and that cynical, "fuck it" attitude informed the music they made from Day One.

While this duo clashed as much as they connected, both remained tethered by a deep creative bond. That’s why after 15 years (and just as many albums), The ILLusionists are gone, but its founders have endured. Demented Inventive Energy (2023) not only restored that chaotic chemistry, but a friendship that had passed the point of no return.

With renewed conviction, D.I.E. builds on the fiery aggression from Death of a Salesman (2013) and the semi-viral “Wildfire” (2018). With a bar so impossibly high, the former ILL members delivered the most technically and thematically complex record of their already-incomparable catalog.

On the closing track, “Spotlight,” rap pioneer DMC declares “these are two of the baddest motherfuckers on Earth!” He then drops a retrospective rhyme that would sound right at home on a Run-DMC classic. It's as unlikely an end for the group as when they formed in the first place. Some good things truly never D.I.E.
